Visitor(s) entering Canada and becoming an ATHL match participant?

Here are the steps...

First Canadian gun laws are probably different than your native country. 

Second your are welcome to join us as we have joined many of your club matches, for example in Idaho, Georgia, IDPA Nationals, Florida, Arizona, Italy, Nevada etc, so why not join us?

Third it is your responsibility to follow Canadian gun laws including gun types, transport, storage and ammunition.  

The Canadian site of record is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the website is chock-full of information located here.

We have summarized the steps below but for detailed, up-to-date information refer to the RCMP website:

Procedure 1
Recommended or if you enter Canada outside of business hours (M-F/0800-1600)

1.1 First download and fill out form CAFC 909 in triplicate - DO NOT SIGN
 
1.2 At least a week BEFORE departing for Canada
   a) Call the Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) of the province (Alberta) 
       at 1 800-731-4000 (for Canada and the United States)
       (506) 624-5380 (for all countries outside of Canada and the United States)
 
   b) Explain that your are attending an ATHL match and 
    your travel time will not allow you to call from your port of entry.  
    and you are calling for an Authorization to Transport Firearm(s) ATT
 
   c) The ATT is required by Canadian law to transport RESTRICTED and  PROHIBITED  firearms additionally
 high capacity mags (>10 rounds for    handguns) are prohibited devices, and may not enter Canada.
 
1.3 Present CAFC 909 at port of entry, airport (Alberta for our club)
 
1.4 Compete in our ATHL match
 
1.5 Before or after the match if you take side trip(s), please note it during 
     the http://myathl.com on-line registration or the Match Director, because the ATT is      only for transport between port of entry, hotel, the range and return to port of entry.
 
1.6 Return home with great memories!



Procedure 2
Arrival in Canada during business hours, riskier because you stay at the port of entry until you receive an ATT or return home!

2.1 First download and fill out form CAFC 909 in triplicate - DO NOT SIGN
 
2.2 Present CAFC 909 at port of entry, airport (Alberta for our club)
 
2.3 Call Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) of the province (Alberta) 
at 1 800-731-4000 (for Canada and the United States)
(506) 624-5380 (for all countries outside of Canada and the United States)
     from port of entry or airport to get an Authorization To Transport Firearm(s) ATT.        The ATT is required by Canadian law to transport RESTRICTED and PROHIBITED        firearms additionally high capacity mags (>10 rounds for handguns) are prohibited 
     devices, and may not enter Canada.
 
2.4 Find your hotel and come compete in our ATHL match

2.6 Return home with great memories!



NOTES and METRICS

The CFO can be reached at 1-800-731-4000 for relevant information by province or territory(Alberta in our case).

A confirmed declaration costs a flat fee of CAN$25, regardless of the number of firearms listed on it. It is valid only for the person who signs it and only for those firearms listed on the declaration for 60 concurrent days.

If driving, the major port of entry is Coutts Alberta which is a 4 hour drive south of Calgary and 18 hours north of Denver Colorado.

If flying, the major port of entry is Calgary Alberta (YYC), with Calgary visitor information located here and Alberta visitor information here.  

Information about the one of the Alberta shooting range is located here and it is located 30Km west of Calgary.
